On March 17, it was revealed that Japan’s Acquisition, Technology & Logistics Agency (ATLA) has signed a contract with communications giant NEC Corporation for research into "anti-UUV [Unmanned Underwater Vehicle] sonar technology." The contract, valued at 2.98 billion yen (approximately 20 million USD), was signed on January 17.
